What Is DA in SEO? Domain Authority vs. First-Party Search Performance
What Does "DA" Stand For in SEO?
In search engine optimization, DA stands for Domain Authority.
Domain Authority is a proprietary search engine ranking score developed by Moz (and mimicked by other third-party tools under names like Domain Rating or Authority Score) that attempts to predict how likely a website is to rank on search engine results pages (SERPs).
Scores range from 1 to 100, with higher scores corresponding to a greater estimated ability to rank.
The Critical Truth: Google Does Not Use Domain Authority
One of the most persistent myths in SEO is that Google calculates an internal "Domain Authority" score and uses it to rank pages.
Domain Authority is not a Google metric. Moz built it as a third-party estimate of ranking strength, and Google has no equivalent internal score by that name or definition — Google has consistently said it evaluates pages individually rather than applying a single site-wide authority number.
Google evaluates:
- Page-level relevance and passage extractability for specific search queries.
- Topical Authority: Whether your site demonstrates deep, interconnected expertise across a specific subject cluster (see our guide on Topical Authority in SEO).
- E-E-A-T signals: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness backed by real entities.
Domain Authority vs. First-Party GSC Performance
| Metric / Aspect | Third-Party Domain Authority (DA) | First-Party Search Console Performance |
|---|---|---|
| Data Source | Third-party web crawlers & backlink indices | Exact user search interactions recorded by Google |
| Calculation | Logarithmic backlink count calculation | Real clicks, impressions, CTR, and SERP positions |
| Relevance to Revenue | Indirect proxy metric; easily manipulated | Direct measurement of user demand and pipeline |
| Actionability | "Increase DA from 32 to 40" (Vague) | "Fix CTR on Position 5 money page" (Concrete) |
Clarifying Common Search Variations: "Das SEO", "DA SEO", and "DadSEO"
Because of overlapping abbreviations and language differences, searchers often encounter mixed terms:
- "DA SEO" (Domain Authority SEO): Refers to strategies centered on increasing third-party link scores.
- "Das SEO" (German for "The SEO"): In German-speaking regions, "Das SEO" is common phrasing for search engine optimization fundamentals.
- "DadSEO": The strategic SEO platform and AI skill built on Rumelt’s Strategy Kernel, focused on first-party Search Console diagnostics rather than vanity scores.
